Buildings and industrial sites in Brazil with piped gas installations are subject to a mandatory periodic leak-tightness test — a requirement that surprises many international facilities teams, since it is not always framed as a recurring obligation elsewhere. Here is how it compares to the frameworks you may already know.

What NBR 15571 Is

NBR 15571 is the ABNT technical standard governing leak-tightness testing (teste de estanqueidade) of internal gas piping networks in buildings, alongside related standards such as NBR 13523 and NBR 14024. It requires a formal technical report and ART from a licensed engineer, and — critically — mandatory periodic renewal, not a one-time certification.

The main structural difference

Most of the frameworks above treat gas piping testing primarily as an installation/alteration event, with recurring checks tied to tenancy or safety-inspection cycles. Brazil’s NBR 15571 is explicitly framed as a mandatory periodic renewal for the piping system itself, independent of any change to the installation — meaning a building can be non-compliant purely because time has passed, even if nothing was altered.

Why This Catches International Building Owners Off Guard

A gas installation that was fully compliant when installed — even one certified to an equivalent international standard — is not exempt from Brazil’s periodic renewal requirement. Foreign-owned facilities and property portfolios in Brazil often discover this only when a report has already expired, since there is no automatic reminder system built into the regulation; the responsibility to track renewal sits with the building’s administrator or owner.
